Having a clean and tidy physical environment, whether at work or at home, boosts productivity and enhances wellbeing.
No, you don’t thrive in chaos
In our careers, we’ve all known someone who says they thrive in the chaotic state of their workstations and work better that way. In fact, studies have shown this belief to be delusory, no matter what your personality.
Being disorganised at work can make you appear busy and therefore “productive”, but the reality is that you’re only busy because you need to spend more time looking for that file, or rushing to meet a deadline because you didn’t plan ahead. Those that seem the busiest at work are often the most inefficient!
One step at a time
Working in a tidy and organised workspace nurtures a calm and composed state of mind. It makes you feel more in control of your tasks, and allows you to be more creative and inspired. Your mind is not distracted by clutter and disorder.
If your workspace could do with a clean-up, start with something simple. Pick a drawer or a file to tidy up or re-organise. Get rid of anything you don’t need. Clearly label your files. Put things in a logical order. Once that’s done, start on another area the next day. Before you know it, you’ll have a clean and tidy workstation and your productivity and efficiency will soar. Do the same thing with your electronic files.
Make being tidy a habit
Once you have your ideal work environment set up, you want keep it that way. Make it a habit to leave your desk ship-shape every day before you go home.
When you get home, apply the same kind of thinking to your house. Maintaining a clean home environment has the same benefits as keeping a clean work environment. That sense of control and serenity also has a positive impact on whatever you do in your private life.
Life coaching can help you to simplify things and gain clarity. Get rid of the litter, the confusion, and the mess. Your surroundings affect everything you do and how well you do it. Now is the time to create a physical environment that supports your productivity, your creativity and your wellbeing.
