What’s the point of life if you don’t find happiness and joy in it? We have all won the lottery of birth to get here in the first place. The odds against your very existence are astronomical – you’re one of the lucky few. Given this fact, it’s almost our duty to make the most of it.
What brings you joy?
One of the first questions I ask my life coaching clients is ‘What makes you happy?’ What are the things that bring them joy in their lives? I get them to write these activities down and to be as specific as possible. When we look at the list, it’s amazing how often they’re not actually doing many of the things that make them happy!
There may of course be valid financial or logistical reasons for not engaging in some of the activities on the list, but often it’s just a case of lazy habits and routine getting in the way of actually enjoying life. But with a little bit of effort and planning, you can put a lot more happiness into your life.
Get a pen and paper and write down the things that make you happy, or have made you happy in the past. Be specific. For example:
- Playing in the park with my kids
- Going to dinner and a movie with my partner
- Hiking in the bush
- Hosting dinner parties for my friends
- Playing tennis
- Travelling through Europe
Plan for happiness
Identify which activities you could be doing more of straight away; the things that for some reason you just stopped doing. Now organise yourself and others and schedule these activities into your dairy or calendar for the next month. Congratulations, you’ve just put more joy into your life!
Next, identify those activities that require a bit more time or money (wealth coaching can help you). Write down your goal, and then write down specific strategies to achieve that goal. Do you need to save for a holiday? Do you need to find more time to spend with your family? If what you want is important enough to you, you’ll find a way to make it work.
Finally, think about all the time you spend on your daily routine when you could be doing what makes you truly happy. Wouldn’t you want to spend most of your spare time doing the things you really enjoy?
Find something you enjoy doing, and then do more of it.
